“And God said to Avram: go forth from your land and from your birthplace and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”

Genesis 12:1

The story of God telling Abraham to leave everything he knows, for a land that God will show him, is one of the first recorded ventures. Abraham placed his convictions in both himself and in God. He struck out on a very new and different path believing that it could work out better than anything that would come of staying put in what he knew.

Abraham’s choice to venture out into the unknown led to the story of the Jewish people. Its radical ideas are some of the cornerstones of Western civilization: that every human has infinite inherent value, that we can build upon nature to improve it, that no king has absolute authority, and that questions matter as much as answers.

That is why I would be so delighted to have you at my Bar Mitzvah. Together, you are a community of family and friends who have made me who I am. You are all thoughtful, caring, and kind. I hope this Saturday, October 24th, feels both old and new in the stories and questions we engage in.
